Different Adsense Products
Google offers 3 different variations of Adsense products, each one can be used to monitise a website. These include Adsense For Content, Adsense For Search and Referrals.
Adsense For Content
This is the most common used and by far the most useful. It exists in the form of different shaped ads which you will have no doubt seen scattered over the web. These Ads are relavent to the content of your website and you earn your revenue whenever the visitor clicks on one of these.
Adsense For Search
Adsense for search is basically what it says on the tin. It is a search bar that you place on your web page allowing your visitors to search either your website or Google's search engine. You will earn a revenue for every search performed through Asense For Search by your visitors if they click on an ad that the search produces.
Referrals
The Referrals product is a little different as you are not earning revenue through contextually matching ads on a per click basis. What you are doing is recommending useful products and services to your users. When your visitors subscribe to the product or service you receive a commission. The referral system is more like affiliate programs and they currently include products like "Google Adsense Subscription", "Google Adwords Subscription", "FireFox browser with Google home page", "Good Picasa Web Album" etc.
